Reading the book...

Knutepunkt Forum (hosted by laivforum.net) - Thu, 04/29/2010 - 12:13
So I've read a little of the book. Most of it I've read on phone & pad, to be honest; somehow, I find that easier these days than holding the thing. Perhaps it's a little bit small? I don't know.

Here's what I've read so far:

Larp of a Thousand Faces. It's an interesting idea, and good to see how it's been tested out in practice. I find myself wondering whether this model is too general to have value for practical design - on the other hand, anything that brings mystical mythological stuff into games is okay in my book. Like.

8 Things I'd Like to Know. Good checklist for larp designers. It's very easy to forget what info players actually need. (This goes for game text/instructions, too.)

6 Common Mistakes. Oh yes, great tips. Of course, like any statement of what people should do, it immediately makes me rebel and think of larps that would break these rules elegantly and wonderfully. Will I ever design them? Not just to rebel, but maybe inspired by this article.

Culture and Social Status in Larping. The topic is worth a book of its own, I think. Especially interesting comments on how playing "traditional" women's roles will tend to give less status (for some? in some contexts?) than playing "dominant" men's roles.

An Essay on Rapture. The first thing I read, and probably my favourite article. What's it about? Why should we care? I'm not entirely sure if there's a message or answer at the bottom of this story, and I don't really want to think too hard about it in case I find out.

Self-fulfillment. Mmm, didn't get this. It didn't entirely work for me - is it a parody on larp theories?

There You Are, There You Ain't. My other favourite article. Boredom and frustration as productive forces; the discovery and generation of self as a strategy in meeting with an unfamiliar and changing context. There is a larp beyond larp, and this article points the way. (I just wish I could have had Johanna and her crew in Agabadan).

The Manifesto Manifesto. Amusing, and an interesting walk through the manifestos of yesteryear. I was about to write my own manifesto as a reaction, got halfway, decided nobody would probably give a toss, and left it unfinished.

Playfulness vs. Structure. Only browsed this one while slightly drunk, but it seems to have interesting points that can be transferred to other contexts. At least that's what my memory of a memory tells me.

So! That's what I've read so far. Anyone else?
